En Primeur News : Monday, 17th May 2010Chateau d'Aiguilhe from the Côtes de Castillon has just been released by proprietor Stefan von Niepperg. The price is £190 per case which compares favourably with the 2005 vintage which is sold out at £250. Widely regarded as one of the best Chateaux of all the "satellite" appellations of Bordeaux, this Côtes de Castillon is certainly the equal of many a Saint Emilion.
"Spearmint, vanilla bean and dried dark fruits on the nose follow through to a full body, with silky tannins and a fruity finish. Still in reserve, but excellent. 90-93 points." James Suckling, WineSpectator.com
"Tiny yields of 20 hectoliters per hectare have produced a wine with terrific fruit intensity, a moderately tannic structure, and hints of chocolate, cedar, spice box, and earth. Although not as big as I expected given the vintage, it is well-made and impressively endowed. Enjoy it over the next 12 years. 90-92 points" Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
In Saint Emilion we have the release of Chateau Rol Valentin at £280. This Chateau has slightly mixed reviews from the critics but James Suckling of The Wine Spectator loved it:-
"Licorice and tar, with hints of ripe berry. Full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe fruit and dense tannins. Yet it's all in near-perfect harmony. This has a new owner and it's even better. 94-97" James Suckling, WineSpectator.com
We have a modestly priced Medoc today with a rating in the 90's from Robert Parker. Chateau Les Grands Chenes is now available at £145 in bond. Not only does Mr Parker rate this wine 90-92 points but he states that he considers that it has the finest potential of all the offerings he has ever tasted from this estate in nearly 32 years of barrel tasting samples in Bordeaux.
"Proprietor Bernard Magrez has fashioned a big time sleeper of the vintage composed of 58% Merlot and 42% Cabernet Sauvignon. It reveals a dense purple color as well as a powerful nose of black currants, licorice, and camphor, full body, and 6-8 years of drinkability. 90-92 points." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate.
