Q : What's the difference between Carruades de Lafite 2005 and Hauts de Smith 2005?
A : Les Hauts de Smith has a higher WS score (90 v 89) and is about £2000/cs cheaper!

Farr Vintners is delighted to offer the superb second wine of top Pessac-Leognan (Graves) estate Smith Haut Lafitte in the outstanding 2005 vintage. Les Hauts de Smith 2005 is a serious wine in its own right, made from low yields of 33 hl/ha - 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The wine was aged entirely in wooden barrels for 14 months. It has a deep red colour with a nose of ripe red fruits, graphite, Asian spices and a whiff of vanilla from the new oak. There is impressive density and concentration on the palate with the tannins in fine balance with the fruit. This is certainly not a simple second wine, there is plenty of body here and, at 5 years of age it is only just ready for drinking. Full and complex, it is also round, creamy and voluptuous with a glossy veneer on top of the classic structure. This is a really fine 2005 Red Bordeaux that can be enjoyed as it matures over the next 10 years.

Les Hauts de Smith 2005 is a wine that we know well at Farr Vintners and it's very popular with the sales team - most of us drink it at home on a regular basis. We also blind-tasted it recently up against a dozen other 2005's that are considerably more expensive and no-one could identify which wine was the Hauts de Smith. On the day It even out-scored famous names such as Clos du Marquis and Clerc Milon.

Those customers who bought second wines of top Chateaux in the 2000 vintage know how good they all turned out to be and what delicious drinking they have given over the last 5 or 6 years. We are confident that the 2005's are even better and this is an excellent example of a 2005 for drinking now and in the mid term whilst we wait for the "grand vins" to soften and mature over the next 10 years.

At £180 per case les Hauts de Smith is already priced at least 20% lower than the second wines of Pape Clement, Lynch Bages, Leoville Barton, Montrose, Pichon Lalande etc and we can guarantee that our price is the cheapest in the market. However, we are pleased to offer further special volume discounts. The wine is available immediately, in original wooden cases, from our cellars at Octavian, Corsham. Highly Recommended!

"Black olive and berry aromas follow through to a full body, with lots of smoky oak and sweet fruit. Soft and very pretty. An outstanding second wine from Smith-Haut-Lafitte".
