Sylvie Garcin’s 2005 Barde-Haut comes from 42-plus acres of vineyard and is dominated by Merlot, with a good healthy dose of Cabernet Franc. It displays notes of chalk, crushed rock, blackcurrants and black cherries. It is a big, masculine style of wine from the Garcin family that has still not attained its plateau of maturity. In spite of the tannins, structure is not an issue with this wine, but it needs time to come around. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030.
The Château Barde-Haut 2005 has a clean, very perfumed bouquet with macerated black cherries and cassis scents, a subtle pastille aromas developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry, smooth and sensual in texture but very closed on the finish that needs just a little more precision. Still, there is a pleasant salinity on the aftertaste, though it needs a couple more years in bottle. Drink 2018 - 2035
Tasted blind. Bright red with some evolution at the rim. Singed nose. Sweet palate entry but pretty tough, drying tannins persist while the fruit seems to be fading. Rather old-fashioned. Acidity coming to the fore. 14.5%
Drink 2012-2020
Good full ruby-red. Explosive ripe aromas of redcurrant, minerals, chocolate mint and tomato. Large-scaled, voluptuous and sweet, with very intense berry and chocolate flavors lifted by minerals, menthol and spices. Finishes with wonderfully broad tannins and an extremely long finish that leaves the palate vibrating. From a very cold terroir (the soil is clay over rocky limestone) that takes longer to warm up each day, but in 2005 this vineyard obviously reached near-perfect ripeness. Offers an exciting combination of thickness and depth with lift.
Very good balance, elegant tannins, no sharp edges, a lot of style, excellently made. Drink from 2012.
A tasty, opulent 2005 from proprietress Helene Garcin, this sexy wine exhibits a dense ruby/purple color followed by a sweet bouquet of licorice, black cherries, blackberries, oak, and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, opulent, fleshy, and disarming, it will drink well in 2-3 years, and should age for 12-15. By the way, I have recently begun sampling my 1998 Barde-Haut, which is just emerging from its adolescent stage. It, too, is a beauty!
From a well-situated, 43-acre vineyard next to the fabulous Troplong-Mondot, the beautiful 2005 Barde-Haut, under the leadership of Helene Garcin, offers abundant amounts of sweet berry fruit intermixed with licorice, pain grille, and barbecue spice notes. This plush, pure, medium to full-bodied effort will provide delicious drinking in 3-4 years, and last for two decades.
The finest effort from this estate since their breakthrough 1998, the 2005 (80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc) exhibits sweet, crunchy black raspberry and cherry fruit interwoven with hints of smoke, herbs, and toasty oak. It is a structured yet powerful, rich, pure, exceptionally ageworthy Barde-Haut that should hit its peak in 4-5 years, and evolve over the following two decades.
Flowers and blackberry follow through to a medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a fresh finish. Balanced and pretty
Dark crimson and very rich and sweet. Sharp edged. A bit harsh. 14.5%. Drink 2018-2030
Very sweet and opulent on the nose, with juicy fruit - a successful modern style. A beginning, middle and end. Not nearly ready but with lots of 2005 ripeness followed by sappy tannins
Rich, vibrant nose - very vital. Masses of acidity. A little bit skinny. Drink 2012-22
