Tasting Notes

This reliable property in the southern Médoc has produced a 2005 with loads of sweet black cherry and mocha, some spice and earth as well as a floral note. It is medium to full-bodied, surprisingly concentrated and very well-made. The final blend was 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Drink it over the next 2-4 years. A sleeper of the vintage. Drink 2015-2019.

Scented and complex on the nose with some pretty sophisticated oaking. Polished and satisfying. Tannins slightly insistent on the finish but a very good drink. Ideally wait a little. Though it is already quite beguiling.

50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. Between Châteaux Giscours and Cantemerle on the highest plots of land in Macau. Quaternary gravel with large pebbles. Vines aged 25 years. Total destemming then fermented in stainless-steel temperature-controlled vats, with six days pre-fermentation maceration. Three weeks vatting. Malolactic fermentation in new oak barrels for 20% of the wine. 12-15 months in oak, 50% new. Maturation on fine lees. Fining with egg whites. Light filtration.

Deep ruby colour. The nose exhibits cassis, black cherry and milk chocolate with a light hint of toast. The palate is pure and smooth with ripe blackcurrant, plum, and black cherry. There is a vibrancy and vivacity to the palate which still has a predominantly primary fruit character layered with notes of smoke and toast. The tannins are soft enough to drink now but have the potential to age, and are in balance with the fruit on the long finish. This is moreish and ready to go, a perfect first foray into the 2005 vintage while others mature in the cellar. Impressive!

Big-time sleeper of the vintage. The 2005 Cambon La Pelouse possesses a dark ruby/purple hue as well as an exotic, flamboyant, fruity bouquet of black cherries, wood smoke, tobacco, and spice. Lush, round, and opulent, it is ideal for drinking over the next 5-6 years. This huge property, sandwiched between Cantemerle and Giscours, has released a blend of 50% Merlot and the rest primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with dollops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. There are 17,500 cases of the 2005, undoubtedly the finest wine ever made at this estate.

An exceptional, up-and-coming performer in the southern Medoc (just outside the Margaux appellation), this sensual blend of 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot possesses a dark ruby/purple color, sweet fruit, and tremendous purity, definition, and nuances (a hallmark of the top 2005s). With medium to full body, velvety but noticeable tannin, and abundant glycerin (no doubt because of the 13+% natural alcohol), it should drink well for 7-8 years.
