Tasting Notes

A pretty, somewhat superficial effort, the 2003 offers aromas of cranberries, sweet cherries, black currants, and spicy new oak. Elegant and medium-bodied, with a shallow finish, it should be consumed over the next decade.

Tasted at a vertical tasting at the château. The 2003 Haut Batailley has a pleasant nose of black fruit and warm gravel, just a hint of licorice in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple, gamey entry. There is an animally aspect to this mature Haut-Batailley which is approachable and charming. It does reflect the vintage more than the terroir but it is still perfectly enjoyable with a lovely savory finish. Drink now and over several years. Tasted July 2016.

Bright crimson with some development. Racy, spiky. Very chewy and chunky. Does not exactly soar. Very chunky! But at least it's not thin like the disappointing Pessac-Léognans. (Average group score: 15.8)

Ripe cassis fruit to smell; well-packed , supple middleweight with a notably fine textured tannin for the cru; sweet, even cassis flavour, excellent quality fruit and good length; exceptional Haut Batailley.

An unusually fleshy, exotic Haut-Batailley, the 2003 possesses loads of blackberry and currant fruit, low acidity, and a surprisingly succulent mouthfeel as well as texture. It will provide delicious drinking during its first 10-12 years of life. This is a sexy Pauillac for near-term drinking.
