Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido 1988

Tasting Notes

The 1988 Sassicaia retains its spellbinding bouquet; pure black plum, tobacco, melted tar and liquorices, demonstrating thrilling definition and life-affirming vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with a beguiling sense of symmetry: perfect balance between austerity and Tuscan voluptuousness, yet the complement each other rather than cancelling each other out. Crushed stones, a touch of black pepper, burnt toast, very fresh on the Graves-like finish, this is Sassicaia in excelsis. Tasted February 2010.

Very dark and glowing ruby. Very ripe and assertive and almost right bank-like. Hint of meat extract. Sweet start and very lively - very marked acidity in fact. Racy and sweet and yet with real distinction and wonderful juiciness. Not too hot on the end. Really on the cusp of ancient and modern styles.
