The dark ruby/plum-tinged 2000 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis, which spends 30 months in oak, is good, but not nearly as perfumed, deep, or impressive as the 1999, 2001, and 2003. It offers aromas and flavors of sweet cassis intermixed with hints of frying lard and dried herbs intertwined with supple tannin. Although superficial, it is a seductive, rich, concentrated effort.
A big step up, yet also mature, the 2000 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis is a classic effort that gives up beautiful olive tapenade, cured meats and dried flowers to go with a core of raspberry-styled fruit. Medium-bodied, supple, textured and ready to go, plan on drinking bottles over the coming 4 to 5 years.
