Although one of the appellation’s more tannic 2004s, the tannin is beautifully balanced by sweet black currant fruit, spring flower, camphor, and licorice notes. This impeccably well-made, medium-bodied Margaux reveals a lovely integration of acidity, tannin, and wood. Give it 2-3 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following two decades. This estate appears to be performing at a high quality level over recent vintages.
“A solid wine with lots of good fruit. Reminds me of an outstanding Burgundy, with mushroom, berry and earth character. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a long, long finish. Well done. Really balanced for the vintage. Jean-Luc Zuger said that he made this wine to be drunk and he certainly has.
Not the most concentrated colour. Rather stewed fruit flavours which lack freshness. I yearn for just a tiny bit more acidity. There's certainly ripeness here, and tannins, but I'd love just a little more lift to give it energy.
Although the 2004 has closed down and appears shorter than it did last year, it reveals a fragrant bouquet of red and black fruits interwoven with truffle, coffee, spice, and cherry characteristics. It is medium-bodied and elegant, but less substantial in the finish than last year. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 12-15 years.
Over the last fifteen years, Malescot Saint-Exupery has possessed a classic Margaux fragrance, a racy, stylish personality, beautiful purity, and a combination of both power and elegance. The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2004 boasts sumptuous aromas of blue fruits, black currants, a whiff of acacia flowers, and a hint of truffles. This medium-bodied Margaux possesses wonderful sweetness, excellent concentration, impeccable balance, and admirable length. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018.
