Chambolle Musigny Combe d'Orveau Ultra, Domaine Perrot-Minot 2012

Tasting Notes

**Note: this limited two barrel cuvée is crafted from 70+ year old vines that abut the Musigny climat which is also called La Combe d'Orveau and is a monopole of Domaine Jacques Prieur; it is not produced every vintage as it is only made from shot berries, known as millerandage - see the Burghound glossary for more detail; 50% whole clusters**
Deep ruby. An intensely floral nose is highly perfumed with an overtly spicy nose of plum and cassis. The incredibly dense and muscular broad-shouldered flavors possess almost painful intensity before terminating in a hugely long, palate staining and mineral-inflected finish. Despite the imposing size, weight and concentration this retains a fine sense of balance and this too should drink well both young and old.

The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Combes d'Orveau Cuvee Ultra originates from a small parcel that in 1885 was classed as Musigny, just below Jacques Prieur's pocket-sized parcel. It includes 50% whole cluster fruit. I have to say, the nose is quite different from the regular cuvee, with more mineralite, reserve and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh vibrant entry. It is very smooth and harmonious with a lifted citric note lending tension from middle to finish. This is should age very well once in bottle.

(vinified with 50% whole clusters): Good bright medium red. Like a coulis of wild black fruits on the nose, lifted by a violet element. Conveys an intense tiny-berry character and a distinctly crunchy texture to its blackberry and blueberry flavors, along with a piquant hint of hawthorn. Very dense, broad, sappy wine with outstanding rising length. For a wine with near-painful intensity, there's also something silky about this beauty. This special cuvee (one of the three barrels is new) always comes from the lowest section of the site, notes Perrot-Minot.
