Despite today being a public holiday in the UK and the US, there is a 2016 release from Certan de May. It's a strange day to release and the price of £1060 per dozen is above our top estimate. This great vineyard has produced some fabulous Pomerols in the past but also some poor ones. Reading the reviews of Neal Martin and James Suckling it seems impossible for the consumer to judge if this vintage is going to be a hit or a miss. It's hard to believe that they were tasting the same wine! The price of Certan de May certainly makes Gazin look like a cracking deal.
Even more surprising was the release of Gruaud Larose this afternoon. This Chateau has historically had a huge market in the USA and is a very popular name in the UK as well. This is certainly the best Gruaud since the 2010 and at £620 the price is not unreasonable for a second growth, albeit at our top estimate.
