En Primeur News : Wednesday, 25th April 2018
Today sees the release of the first vintage of Château Haut Batailley to be made by the new owners, the Cazes family of Lynch Bages. The 2017 vintage is offered en primeur at £495 per 12 bottles.
Until 2016, the property was owned by the aunt of Grand-Puy-Lacoste proprietor Xavier Borie and he made consistently good wine here, albeit not at the same quality level as his own property – Grand-Puy-Lacoste. The vineyards of Haut Batailley are very well placed in the heart of Pauillac, bordering those of Pichon Lalande, Les Forts de Latour and Lynch Bages. The Cazes family have undoubtedly increased the quality significantly as they look to establish it as a genuine rival of their illustrious neighbours.
We were extremely impressed by this classic Pauillac (in a vintage where Pauillac was our favourite commune) and the initial comments from the press have also been extremely promising. James Suckling rates it 94-95 points which is just one point behind Lynch Bages and Pichon Lalande and the equal of Les Forts de Latour.
The wine will carry a completely new label from this vintage.
