En Primeur News : Thursday, 24th May 2018
Just released are three top names from Pomerol. Certan de May is out at £950, Le Gay is at £850 and the cult La Violette at £2200. This is a wine with a 450 case production that has to be purchased en primeur as previous vintages are rarely available or incredibly expensive.
This morning starts with a disappointing release from Château Kirwan who have chosen to reduce their price by just a token 70 cents from 2016. It is offered at £380 per dozen. Buyers would be much better off purchasing the very good wine made here in 2015 (a great Margaux vintage) which is available in the market at £370 as it has higher ratings from all the critics.
It is becoming clear in this en primeur campaign that only a few châteaux appear to be genuinely interested in their wine being sold through to consumers rather than being stock-piled by the negociants of Bordeaux. There are some very good wines in 2017 but none is better than the same property's 2016 and very few can match their 2015 either. If prices are not lower than the current market for those two vintages then we see no point in our customers buying them.
We are hopeful that some châteaux that are yet to release will offer their wines at realistic prices (as did Lynch Bages) so our advice is to wait for these.
