2018 Côte Rôtie, Château d'Ampuis, Guigal

Guigal's Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis is named after the estate that lies in the heart of Ampuis which was bought by the family in 1995. Often an exceptional wine, it can be overlooked due to the highly-coveted La La bottlings (Landonne, Mouline and Turque). However, this Syrah from vines over 50 years in age has great potential and is made the same way as the single vineyard wines, yet is sold at a fraction of the price. 2,500 cases are produced from a blend of seven vineyards, spending 38 months in new French oak before bottling. Jeb Dunnuck writes that "in top years, it’s quality can be just as high as the single vineyard releases" - high praise indeed given that Ampuis generally sells for between a third and a quarter of the price of the La Las.

2018 is a great vintage in the Northern Rhône that will likely surpass 2016 and 2017. The wines show similarities to the brilliant 2015s. Jeb Dunnuck is effusive in his praise of the Château d'Ampuis, rating it 97-100 points. He states it is "about as classic Côte Rôtie as they come," calling it "another stunning vintage" that is "flawlessly balanced.

Available for just £360 per six bottles in bond, the 2018 Château d'Ampuis offers great value in a region that has seen high demand and rising prices. We are delighted to offer a small parcel of both bottles and magnums, which will be available for delivery in January 2022.

Lastly, the 2018 Côte Rôtie Château D'Ampuis is going to flirt with perfection and is about as classic Côte Rôtie as they come. Lots of cassis, graphite, spring flowers, vanilla, and game notes all give way to a full-bodied Côte Rôtie that’s flawlessly balanced, has silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. This will be another stunning vintage for this wine that readers can find for a fraction of the cost of the top La Las. It’s worth the money.

Built along the lines of the 2015, the 2018 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis is full-bodied, rich, ripe and concentrated. It seems awfully easy to drink right now, yet I'm confident the underlying structure will be revealed in time. Vanilla and mocha notes accent huge fruit—a mix of blueberries and raspberries—finishing plush and long.
