We have long been fans of Pieropan.  Widely regarded as being the very best white wine producer in Veneto, and arguably the best in all of Italy, this is one of the country’s most important producers and the master of Soave.

Their most recent release is “Calvarino 5”.  This is the first release of their “Vini dell’Anima” (Wines of the Soul) collection, and is a blend of five vintages of Calvarino – 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 & 2012 – aged in cement tanks and bottled in 2020.  It is a both a tribute to the late Leonildo Pieropan, and a celebration of the remarkable new winery that is dedicated to him.  The five vintages mark the five years of construction.

The wine itself is considerably more than a novelty edition.  Followers of the estate will know just how well the wines age and the clearly masterful blending of the five vintages has added to this: it is a wine of inimitable character. A sample tasted here in Battersea last Friday impressed us greatly.

The wine is offered in wooden presentation cases of 3 bottles, is lying with us and is available now.

A new wine from Pieropan, this blend of five vintages – 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 – celebrates the five years it took to build the estate's new winery. Aged on the lees in cement, the wine was bottled at the end of 2020. It's bursting with ash, stone, melon, peach, papaya and pineapple aromas. Intense and chiselled, there’s a prominent mineral character here, joined by juicy exotic fruits and aromatic floral notes. A big wash of fresh, saline acidity runs through the core, taking it to a very long, elegant, lifted conclusion.

James Button, Decanter.com, May 2022

A blend of the five vintages spanning 2008 to 2012, bottled in 2020, this magnificent wine serves to remind of the ageing potential in Soave when properly handled. Pale lemon-straw in the glass, there is an intoxicating nose of beeswax, struck flint, citrus peel and peach skin on the nose. The palate is remarkably youthful, the citrus and stone fruit notes pushed to the front. Fleshing out on the mid palate, honeysuckle and more struck flint add layers of complexity before the vibrant cut of acidity comes through. This is very fine, intense yet always precise, with a long, lifted finish. Excellent.
