The September Releases

Every year a growing number of top global wineries are now sold through the Bordeaux Place through the month of September. These represent some of the most sought after and highest scoring international wines on the market. From Chile to California, Australia to Argentina and Super Cuvées to Super Tuscans, the diversity on show offers something for everyone.

The wines released include a clutch of ex-château releases from Bordeaux. These will include 2010 Latour and 2012 Palmer, along with the latest release of Château d'Yquem's dry white: Ygrec.

Much like a Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, the releases will come quickly so that the focus of the market can turn to these releases. You can find all the latest news and availability for the wines here as the wines are released, including pricing, scores and backgrounds on each producer.

2019 John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon, Wynns

John Riddoch first planted vines in the Coonawarra in 1891, making the Scotsman a true pioneer of Australian viticulture. The red soils (terra rossa) of this region are unique and are integral to the quality and style of the wines produced here. The Wynn family went on to buy the land and save the vineyards from conversation to farmland in 1951. Their first wine, produced under the Wynns label, was produced in 1953. Wynns has gone on to become synonymous with the region's quality red wine production. They now own several hundred hectares across the region. The John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon was first created as an ode to the founder in 1982. Now forty years into its own history, the focus has always been to make a wine from the very best estate fruit in the heart of the terra rossa, using less than 1% of the best Cabernet Sauvignon grown here. The results speak for themselves.

Pencil lead and graphite, packed full of supple and savoury Cabernet flavours, a punch of dark fruits and eucalyptus notes on the finish. Smooth, sweet raspberry fruits, touches of cherry pit and cedar adds definition and depth. Impossible to miss the personality and swagger on this wine. 35% new oak (French oak barrels and hogsheads), 3.61ph, 37hl/h yield. Tasted twice, excellent quality.

2018 The Armagh

Now in their third generation, the Barry family have been making wine out of the Clare Valley since the late 1950s. Though the entire holdings have expanded to nearly 200 hectares, The Armagh remains a very small production wine at less than 500 cases per year. This 100% Shiraz comes from a vineyard 2 kilometres from the winery in the hamlet of Armagh. The wine itself has changed with the times. Older vintages are full-blooded and very powerful, with heady alcohol, ripe fruit and significant oak influence. Recently, that has significantly shifted. Oak has reduced, alcohol significantly dropped, and the style - though still ripe - moving much more towards freshness and vibrancy. Critics are always full of praise for this pinnacle of Clare Valley reds.

A meaty, savoury, spiced nose, something so welcoming about it, warm and friendly with a touch of perfume, dark chocolate, cinnamon and pink peppercorn to the blackcurrant, damsons and plums. Rich, ample and generous, yet delivered with such supple and velvety-soft tannins. This has an elegance to it, a cool sophistication in terms of the profile - neat and tidy, quite linear right now, brimming with energy, not yet fully expansive or loose, but quietly controlled and calm. It's confident though with invigorating acidity and I love the focus, detail and the purity of fruit. Sweet red fruits - strawberries, raspberries and red cherries with a slight balsamic, pomegranate edge that is so delicious. Juicy, crunchy, succulent and ripe but with an effortless edge to it. Supremely drinkable and likeable - what a gorgeous wine! A quality vintage and excellent winemaking skill on show. Ageing 18 months in French oak. 2025 - 2045

2019 Beaulieu Vineyard

Georges de Latour is a cuvée steeped in Napa Valley's history. First bottled in 1936 and adorned with its current name in 1940, it lays claim to being Napa's first "cult" Cabernet. Over 80 years of history are woven into this wine, named after Beaulieu Vineyard's founder. Based in Rutherford, the property was bought by Georges de Latour in 1900, with significant acquisitions of the land that would become the foundation of the modern vineyard area made in 1903 and 1910. A business that survived prohibition, significant investments have been made again since the turn of the century, with a new winery completed in 2008. Michel Rolland is the consultant winemaker.

Wow! The aromas to this are really exceptional, with a tangerine edge to the blackcurrants, graphite, lead pencil, flowers and wet earth. It changes all the time. So expressive and refined. Full-bodied with great intensity and depth of fruit. The ultra-fine tannins display millions of layers. The texture on the palate is superb and lasts for minutes. This is the new 1974 George de Latour, which was a legend. Real Napa Valley red here. Drinkable now, to understand it, but truly great in five to six years and onwards. Benchmark.

2019 Caiarossa

Caiarossa lies close to the Tuscan coast, blending Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sangionvese, Petit Verdot and Alicante in a complex alliance of native and international varieties. First produced in 2003, the entire vineyard has been certified organic since inception and biodynamically certified since 2005. This is an intense, full-bodied yet very well-balanced and polished red with velvety, firm and caressing tannins. Ripe black plums, blueberries, chocolate, mocha, sweet spice and dried lavender. Some oyster shells, too. Layered and full of character. Creamy at the end from the polished tannins. 26% syrah, 24% cabernet franc, 23% merlot, 14% cabernet sauvignon, 7% petit verdot, 4% sangiovese and 2% grenache. From biodynamically grown grapes. 2019 Catena Zapata

Catena Zapata was founded in 1902, a family business that has been greatly influencial in the revival of Malbec in Argentina, as well as pushing the envelope when it comes to plantings at high altitude in the foothills of the Andes mountains. The Adrianna Vineyard (pictured) lies at over 5,000 feet above sea level. The Nicolas Catena Zapata is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet Franc from ungrafted vines. First produced in 1997, the focus has always been to make a blend similar to those from Bordeaux in the 18th and 19th centuries. Mundus Bacillus hails entirely from the Adrianna Vineyard, covering 1.4 hectares, and is 100% Malbec. Aged in the same manner as the Nicolas Catnea Zapata, the freshness retained from this unique vineyard has drawn very high praise from the critics.

2019 Penfolds Bin 169

Penfolds needs little introduction. The first name many think of when speaking of Australian wine, the brand has gone from strength to strength under the stewardship of Peter Gago. Bin 169 is a Cabernet Sauvignon project based in Coonawarra and is seen as the Cabernet equivalent to RWT Shiraz. First bottles in 2008, the Bin 169 hails from the same vineyards that made Max Schubert's original 1973 Coonawarra Claret. This cuvée is only bottled in the very best years, skipping 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017.

Such impressive freshness to the aromas of pure mulberries, blackcurrants, blueberries, redcurrants and a swathe of roasting herbs, such as bay leaf and sage. Iodine and nori, too. The French oak is nicely subsumed already and there’s fruit purity that really sings here. The palate has a wealth of rich and ripe blue and black-fruit flavors with plenty of extract and depth on offer. This is an impressively bold, smoothly honed and focused cabernet. Fine, polished tannins frame the long finish. Drink over the next decade and more.

Bibi Graetz

Bibi Graetz founded his eponymous domain in 2000 by overhauling his family's winery. The wines he produces are IGT Toscana in classification, but lie between Chianti and Super Tuscan in style. Testamatta, a pure Sangiovese, is the flagship of his estate. It hails from several parcels of Chianti with vines over 50 years in age. After fermentation in large neutral vessels and a light psot fermentation maceration, the wine is aged in large old oak for nearly two years. Colore, the top wine, is sourced from four vineyards with very old vines at high altitude, and is made in limited quantities. The winemaking is very similar to Testamatta, allowing the parcel selection to show through. Both whites are made from Ansonica and aged in a proportion small oak barrels for 7 months to produced rich and savoury wines. The family's artistic background is always on display in the labels of the wines, designed by Bibi himself.

2019 Joseph Phelps

One of Napa's early visionaries, Joseph Phelps founded his winery in 1973. In 1974 he released the very first Insignia, a Bordeaux blend that would pave the way for so many other wineries in the region. Through a steady acquisition of vineyards this blend was sourced from some of the great sites in Napa - Rutherford, Oakville, Stags Leap and Oak Knoll - as well as the "Home Ranch" in St Helena, where the winery is based. Insignia remains a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend from these regions, aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak. The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon offers a taste of Insignia with an earlier drinking window. Aged in closer to 50% new oak (both French and American) for 18 months, it is a sweeter, softer style.

Cloudburst

Cloudburst sits between the ocean and Leeuwin National Park in Margaret river. Strong proponents of biodynamic farming, the vines are dry-farmed with a focus on creating biodiverse environment in the vineyard. Varietal Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are made in minimalist bottles that simply display the winery name. As is common in Australia, both are bottled under screwcap. Volumes are miniscule - total production is roughly 5000 bottles a year across both wines.

2019 Peter Michael

Peter Michael's wines blend the expertise of experience with some of the best sites the region has to offer. Au Paradis has been made since 2009 at Peter Michael, with a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon tamed by Cabernet Franc. Based in Oakville, many of the vines from this site are now reaching 40 years in age. It is aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak. Les Pavots sits in Knights Valley in Sonoma County, representing a typical Cabernet Sauvignon-led Bordeaux blend. The 46 acre site sits over 1000 feet above sea level with significant elevation change, allowing for the growing of different varieties and blending of riper and fresher elements. Like Au Paradis, it is entirely aged for 18 months in new French oak.

2020 Viñedo Chadwick

Since its first vintage in 1999, the aim of Viñedo Chadwick has always been to produce an icon of Chilean, South American, and even New World wine. The vines are now 30 years old, planted in cool sites of the Maipo Valley. Made by the brilliant Francisco Baettig - as with Errazuriz's other top wines - the drive for quality saw the 2014 awarded 100 points from James Suckling. Invariably one of Chile's highest-scoring wines, it is always heavily Cabernet Sauvignon dominant and spends nearly two years in roughly 75% new French oak barrels before bottling.

2019 Rubicon, Inglenook

Part of Napa's history, Rubicon has been Inglenook's top wine since its inception in 1978. Alluding to a river crossed by Julius Caesar in order to conquer Rome, the name intends to inspire revolution and risk. Started by director Francis Ford Coppola in the 1970s, Ingelnook's prosperity owes its financing to the profits from the legendary Godfather films. Stephane Derenencourt is now the consultant here, lending the experience that has refined several Bordeaux châteaux including Les Carmes Haut Brion, Smith Haut Lafitte and Domaine de Chevalier.

A storrming, stonking Napa wine, playing at the top of its game in 2019. Somehow takes the power and concentration of Napa but makes it full of texture, life, light and shade. Espresso, liqourice root, cocoa bean, cassis, cranberry, black cherry, cold ash and crayon. Hard not to fall in love with, nothing overdone, everything in its place. 2019 Vin de Constance

The vineyards in Constantia date back to the late 17th Century, but the sweet wines from the region were lost for over two centuries until their revival in the 1990s. The modern wines have increasingly focused on freshness and precision under winemaker Matthew Day, who took over from Adam Mason in 2012. Made from 100% Muscat de Frontignan, the grapes are painstakingly harvested at night (for freshness), berry by berry to ensure optimal raisining for concentration, acidity and freshness. Fermentation proceeds unaided, and can take up to a year to reach its end, leaving a wine with natural sweetness and incredible depth. Barrel ageing has been reduced to preserve primary fruit, but remains at least three years, allowing for slow development of flavour. The unique result invariably draws significant praise from critics.

The 2019 Vin de Constance is matured for 18 months in 500-liter Hungarian and French oak barrels, 50% new, followed by another 18 months in oak foudres. The growing season saw more sunlight hours than previous vintages (2,998 compared to 2,588 in 2018 for example). It has an understated nose, almost Sauternes-like even if it does not contain an ounce of botrytis. Subtle nutty aromas percolate through the wild honey and quince scents, wax resin and lanolin. The palate is medium-bodied and very pure. Disarmingly fine acidity, it is slightly Germanic towards the finish. with a hint of lemongrass lingering on the aftertaste. This is a superb Vin de Constance under the tenure of Matt Day that is a step closer to what you might confusingly call a non-sweet dessert wine.

2019 Opus One

Opus One has a rich history but a firm eye on the future. Founded by Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi after an encounter at Mouton Rothschild in the late 1970s, the continued droughts in California have meant a reassessment of water usage at the property that includes an 80% reduction in water use on the ground at Opus (separate to ongoing projects in the vineyard that include Napa Green Vineyard and Winery certifications). Based in Oakville, the vineyards at Opus sit amongst the most famous sites in the Alluvial Fan that include To Kalon, Ballestra and River Parcel. A recent project comes to fruition in 2019, with the yeasts now cultivated from wild cultures in the vineyard and winery - outside cultures are no longer brought in to initiate fermentations. Always a classic Bordeaux blend with a high proportion of Cabernet, Opus One is invariably a style that straddles the Atlantic, taking inspiration from the Médoc as much as its neighbours.

Overture, a multi-vintage blend from the same vineyards as Opus One, offers an earlier drinking taste of the style at a more approachable price point. Previously only sold at the winery, it is now available around the world.
