Three Knockout Dry Rieslings - 2015 Reichsrat von Buhl

Late last year, we introduced you to the marvellous dry Rieslings of Reichsrat von Buhl. This estate is not just one of the great wineries of Germany’s Palatinate (or Pfalz) region, it is one of the best producers in all of Germany. Then we were selling the 2016 vintage but now we can offer an even more exciting proposition - their late release 2015s. These are even more complex and compelling, thanks to an additional 12 months maturation on their lees.

Established in 1849, by the early 1900s von Buhl’s wines were fetching higher prices than some of the great names of Bordeaux and Burgundy. Served at the opening of the Suez Canal and at the Queen Mother’s 100th Birthday, these are wines that epitomise Germany’s often-overlooked dry style of Riesling. Today's wines are overseen by Mathieu Kauffmann, the former chef du cave at Bollinger. His expertise and some prime vineyard sites have produced some of the best dry Rieslings that money can buy (and it doesn’t take much money either!).

We have a small parcel of three great late release Rieslings from the 2015 vintage to offer you. These are remarkable wines with a real intensity and energy. They are, however, dry wines – if you are used to German Riesling from the Mosel, these are far drier than the Kabinett classification. Whilst there is often a hint of residual sugar on the mid-palate, that soon gives way to an incredibly mineral and dry finish – the hallmark of the range and the region.

All of the wines are Grosses Gewächs, meaning Grand Cru. These are fabulous expressions of dry Riesling from an excellent vintage, all at typically undervalued German prices. As they should be, each vineyard has its own character and they are very different styles to one another, so do read the tasting notes below from JancisRobinson.com’s resident German wine expert, Michael Schmidt, along with our own. Within each note, we’ve put three key words in bold which we believe sum up the wine’s main character.

These are beautifully elegant, bone-dry wines for very little money when compared to many other producers of a similar calibre. They are utterly delicious now but have the fruit, structure, acidity and minerality to age very well.

“Perfumed fragrance of exotic fruit with mandarin and orange as the main contenders. Quite sweet on the tip of the tongue, creamy, but also showing plenty of substance and broad structure with a little wood spice more than hinting at vinification in new(ish) oak."

“With a bright lemon-gold colour in the glass, this is expressive and spicy on the nose, with notes of pink peppercorn, lemon curd, and poached pear. The palate has excellent viscosity and texture, with the extra lees ageing adding weight and intensity of savoury spices. The bright acidity cuts through this texture and tightens the fruit profile from richer peach to cooler lime and lemon. The finish is precise, long, and complex, with a myriad of sweet and savoury spices that you might more closely associate with Pinot Gris or Gewurztraminer, were it not for the refreshing acid balance."

“It’s surprising how an extra year seems to have already resulted in some waxy and fumy notes one would associate with Riesling of a certain age. On the palate, the Kirchenstück reflects the generosity of the 2015 vintage with a full body, supple texture and an almost sweet expression not much bothered by acidity. There is ripe fruit, but it’s not a fruit-driven wine."

17.5 points, Michael Schmidt, JancisRobinson.com

“A bright gold in colour, this has a heady, complex perfume of dried flowers, lime, struck flint and just a hint of petrol. The palate has a saline, oyster-shell edge that makes for a moreish and savoury palate style. Thyme, preserved lemons and juicy limes all come through, with rich and creamy texture adding real weight and length. Light spices build to the lip-smacking savoury tones that make this incredibly moreish. With time and air, this opens up even more, with sweet and exotic spices coming through. The acidity keeps all this exuberance in check, and adds to the potential for ageing for this wine. Quite stunning, dry, rich Riesling that sits with the very best in its category from anywhere in the world."
