The Forbidden Vineyard is Back – and Better than Ever!

We are delighted to announce that Saint Véran Lieu (Inter)dit from Maison Verget is back in stock with the recent arrival of the 2017 vintage. This is the sixth vintage of this amazing White Burgundy and each of the previous five has sold out immediately on the day of release. With a Wine Advocate rating of 93 points, this is the highest score that this cuvée has ever achieved and this puts it on a quality level with top Premier Crus from the villages of Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, all of which sell at three times the price or more!
Those of you who have snapped up previous vintages will be aware that the fruit for this wine is sourced from a vineyard named “Côte-Rôtie” in the Burgundian village of Davayé. Maison Verget has been forbidden from using the vineyard’s actual name, just in case this white Burgundy is confused with the red wine of the same name from the Rhône Valley! Instead, Jean-Marie Guffens calls it ‘Lieu (Inter)dit’ - an amusing jeu de mots between its literal meaning (‘forbidden place’) and the term ‘Lieu Dit’ which is used in Burgundy to mean ‘designated vineyard’.
Verget’s 2017’s are all excellent, but this wine was a clear standout for us. There is stunning complexity and density here, all balanced by fabulous tension and minerality - all for just £165 per 12 bottles in bond! We were so impressed that we bought all that Monsieur Guffens would let us have.

“As in previous years, this wine comes mainly from the "Côte Rôtie" vineyard in Davayé. Verget have been forbidden to use the name of the vineyard on the label. Jean-Marie Guffens tells us that this wine has exceptional density yet with great tension and minerality. It was produced only from free run juice and vinified in barrel with 25% new oak. It was aged for a further 7 months with regular batonnage. Once again this is a highlight of the tasting, with great intensity of stone fruits and a hint of white pepper and toast on the nose. The palate is dense and rich, with peaches and cream giving great generosity before layers of spicy complexity and the cut of vibrant acidity give a weightless intensity and harmony to the wine. Very long, pure and balanced on the finish."

“The 2017 Saint-Véran Lieu (Inter)dit is excellent, wafting from the glass with notes of hazelnut cream, ripe citrus fruit, confit lemon and honeysuckle. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and tangy, with a bright line of acidity to balance its deep core of fruit and a long, precise finish. This will be well worth seeking out and comes warmly recommended. Drink 2018-2026."

“Lean tight fresh fruits flint the nose is bright the palate has a mix of citrus apple all backed by chalk and flint. There is a hint of sweet fruit at the back richer more depth the finish is long bright with struck flints. Drink 2019-24."
