The Coche-Dury Of The New World - 2016 Hunting Hill Chardonnay

There have been some rave reviews and massive scores following the biggest ever tasting of Kumeu River Chardonnays by a group of distinguished critics - there were 48 wines tasted in 4 flights of 12. These fabulous wines are at the same quality level of many of the best White Burgundies but are a fraction of the price of their old world counterparts.

Headline quotes include this from Jancis Robinson MW  “Do we need white burgundy? This thought went through my head at the end of an amazing, and impressively consistent, tasting of 48 Chardonnays from Kumeu River in New Zealand last month.” The review on cult blog Vinolent states: “If you want an affordable alternative to Coche-Dury then Kumeu is what you are after.” With tongue slightly in cheek, he also suggests that serving Kumeu River Hunting Hill in in a Coche-Dury bottle would have your guests “(a) none the wiser and (b) suitably impressed”.

Our favourite single vineyard Chardonnay from Kumeu River is Hunting Hill, which has been described as “the Puligny Montrachet of New Zealand”. We are delighted to offer the 2016 vintage – a wine with huge scores – at a very modest £240 per dozen in bond.

Our own Thomas Parker MW has written in depth about this incredible Kumeu River tasting and his notes can be found here. Notes from other critics can also be found here:
