The New Vintage from New Zealand's Latest Star

Here at Farr, we have long been champions of the wines of New Zealand. The quality of Kumeu River, Felton Road, Craggy Range et al. has been proven time and time again. You may remember that last year, with the 2015 vintage, we added Pyramid Valley to this illustrious list. We recently tasted the 2016 vintage and we're delighted to say that the wines are every bit as exciting this time around.

Pyramid Valley is not like anything else New Zealand has to offer. These Chardonnays and Pinots are some of the most ambitious, individual and complex wines to come out of this amazing country.

The History

Mike Weersing, having cut his teeth with the great and the good in Burgundy, scoured New Zealand for land that he thought could produce wines that would offer something different to those of his peers. With Burgundy very much still in his mind, he and his wife Claudia found a 2.2 hectare site, established four different, very densely planted vineyards based on differing soils and bedrocks. Each block is vinified separately in old oak and in amphora, meaning each wine maintains its unique characteristics.

Then a couple of years ago, the story became even more interesting as our old friend, Steve Smith MW (who put Craggy Range on the map), acquired the business. With Steve involved, it made us even more keen to bring these wines in as few people understand New Zealand's complex terroir like Steve does.

The Wines

We have two Chardonnays and two Pinots to offer you today. The Lion's Tooth Chardonnay  is an instantaneously pleasurable glass of wine. Lots of fresh fruit but a real backbone of minerality that holds everything together very well. The Field of Fire Chardonnay is the more complex, more Burgundian of the two. Lots of peach, Meursault-esque fruit with Pyramid's hallmark flinty mineral notes. The Pinots are very complex yet, thanks to their diverse soils, bedrocks and aspects, they are very different to one another. Whilst the Angel Flower Pinot Noir has a floral nose and a juicy, primary fruit style, the Earth Smoke Pinot Noir has a more savoury and earthy character. The one common link is their purity of fruit and similarity in structure and profile to Burgundy.

The Wine Spectator's Matt Kramer has said this of Pyramid Valley: “If New Zealand has created a finer Pinot Noir than these two single-vineyard wines from Pyramid Valley, I haven’t tasted it”. Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW of the Wine Advocate once commented “You may think you know New Zealand wines but I can assure you that until you have tasted Pyramid Valley, you have no idea."

Pyramid Valley is undoubtedly one of New Zealand's most exciting stories and now, in Steve's hands, its future looks even brighter. Volumes are tiny so we fully expect these wines to disappear quickly. Each wine has its own individual story to tell so to truly understand this amazing project, we'd recommend a six bottle case of each! Each wine will drink well on arrival and for several years to come.

“This is the more complex of the two 2016 chardonnays from Pyramid Valley. There’s a gently flinty, biscuity edge to the yellow-peach aromas. The palate is layered and concentrated with pristine yellow-peach flavors, interlaced with fine, stony mineral notes. Brilliant chardonnay. Drink now. Screw cap."

“This has a very enticing and complex nose with lightly smoky red and purple cherries, freshly ground baking spices and sappy, woody, bracken-like nuances. The palate has a beautifully supple texture with juicy red and black-cherry flavors running long and fresh. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
