2012 Cantemerle - “A wine of unmistakable finesse and delicacy”

You wouldn't necessarily think that £25 could buy you a bottle of classified growth Bordeaux with some bottle age that is drinking well now. Usually, this price bracket is reserved for the better 'petits châteaux' and other generic bottlings - often wines that are not yet ready to drink. That is why 2012 Cantemerle is such a good buy - not only is it drinking brilliantly now, it is a classic Bordeaux and a classed growth, no less!

Château Cantemerle is located just south of the Margaux appellation and it has been making very good value wine for a long time now. In fact, farming has existed in this location in one form or another since the 14th century.

Their terroir is unusual for that part of the Médoc, in that it is predominately very deep, fine gravel, much more commonly found further south in Pessac. This terroir tends to produce a much more elegant, refined and 'lifted' style of Bordeaux where a freshness and a lightness of touch is more prevalent.

Their 2012 vintage is so good that we got rather excited about it and bought everything that we could find. As a result, it is one of our 'go to' recommendations when people ask for classic, ready to drink claret.

This is a soft, approachable interpretation of left bank Bordeaux, with cherry fruit and supple, integrated tannins and it is drinking perfectly now. Throw into the mix that this is probably the cheapest classified growth Bordeaux around, and you have a real winner on your hands.

Deep ruby in colour, with cool, fresh blackcurrant and black cherry, hints of camphor and blackcurrant leaf, and a touch of sweet vanilla. The palate is pure, slender and cool, all blossom and crunchy fruits, supported by moderate levels of ripe and integrated tannins. The floral edge of the 2012 vintage shines through and the perfumed fruit core is at its best, offering a wine that is drinking very well now.

16+ points, Farr Vintners

Deep dark crimson. Sweet cherry chocolate on the nose. Rich but fluid. Lively, juicy, fresh and harmonious. Very attractive in a lighter style but has very good length too.

16.5, Julia Harding, JancisRobinson.com

This red shows some cassis, blueberries and floral notes on the nose. Some tar, too. Medium to full body, juicy tannins and a fruity finish. Enticing wine. Drink now or hold.
