Magnums of Magnificent Claret

A very good friend of Farr Vintners is a Master of Wine and a great judge of Bordeaux. He has been visiting the region and tasting its wines for nearly 50 years. When he tasted the 2010 vintage en primeur he was so impressed by two wines in particular that he ordered 50 cases of each bottled in magnums! These cases have been stored undisturbed under bond in the UK since their original release from the châteaux and now, with the wines approaching their 10th birthday, he has decided that it is time to sell them. We are delighted to offer these unique parcels of magnums to you today.

Château Batailley 2010 is a classic Pauillac that Neal Martin recently scored 95/100 and described as being “magnificent”. We tasted it a few weeks ago and we can also vouch for the exceptional quality and can confirm that this is one 2010 that has turned the corner and is now ready to drink – but will give many years of pleasure.

Château Léoville Barton 2010 is pretty much the epitome of what great red Bordeaux is all about. This outstanding 2nd growth has made a wine of near 1st Growth quality that is dense, brooding and powerful with waves of ripe but structured cassis-infused Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. It still needs a couple of hours in a decanter but what a legend this is going to become. Probably the best Barton that we’ve ever tasted. Neal Martin rates this one a whopping 97 points – the same score as Château Lafite  which sells for 7 times the price!

“The 2010 Batailley repeated its magnificent showing when poured at the château. It has a detailed bouquet of blackberry and cedar, quite backward and seemingly having advanced little since I tasted it in April 2016. The palate remains full of tension and brimming with energy, delivering classic cedar and tobacco notes toward the persistent finish. Batailley can produce wines that live many decades, and this is clearly one of them. Tasted at the property."

"Tasted at the Union de Grand Cru in London. Anthony Barton appeared to have made a scintillating wine in 2010 and I hoped it would live up to expectations. It does. And judging by the mutterings I heard from others, I was not alone in that opinion. The Leoville Barton is more bashful on the nose than the Langoa Barton, although there are clearly abundant, pure blackberry and blueberry fruit encased within and they will burst forth with bottle age. The palate offers exquisite balance with luscious, intense black tarry fruit on the entry that exert a gentle but insistent grip. There is a wonderful symmetry to this wine and a life-affirming sense of harmony and precision on the finish. This is unequivocally a fabulous Leoville Barton enveloped in an effortless aura - a wine that easily surpassed even my own lofty expectations. Tasted November 2012."
