Looking for Value in Mature Pauillac? We've Got It!

The Médoc is the source of many of the world’s greatest Cabernet Sauvignon based wines and at its heart lies Pauillac – home to 3 of Bordeaux’s 5 First Growths and several of the so-called Super-Seconds.

Whilst quality from there is undeniable, it is a challenge to find availability and value for money in the truly great years. This is because demand for these wines is strong throughout the world, especially in ready-to-drink vintages. Of these, most experts would say that 2005 and 2009 are the best of the last 30 years.

We have tasted these two vintages extensively and studied the market very carefully. Our conclusion is that the best deals for quality and value from these exceptional vintages come from Château Batailley. Situated just 1500 metres west of the great Château Latour - and next to vineyards of Lynch Bages, Pichon Lalande and Grand Puy Lacoste, this property produces classic claret from a blend that includes 70% Cabernet Sauvignon. Whilst the wines made here will easily age for 20 or 30 years plus, they are also relatively forward, plush and spicy and in these two vintages, they can certainly be enjoyed now. Our Master of Wine, Thomas Parker, explains in more detail here.

An analysis of the pricing and ratings of several leading Pauillacs in these two vintages shows what a great deal we are offering today – and the prices get even more attractive if bought in larger quantities.

“Tasted single blind at Southwold. Slightly more reticent on the nose after the previous wine but there is still very good fruit concentration. Blackberry, plum with just a faint hint of orange zest. The palate is ripe and sweet, blackberry, blueberry and a touch of black olive. Feminine and well crafted, generous and giving, supple and lithe towards the finish. It caresses the palate on the way out with a kiss of dark chocolate on the finish. Beautifully crafted and sure to age gracefully. Drink 2015-2030+"

"Tasted at the château. The Batailley was great out of barrel and is great in bottle. The nose has superb precision, not immensely powerful but very refined and focused, redolent of its neighbour Grand Puy Lacoste. The palate is very composed with succulent tannins, very refined with a spicy, vibrant finish that is filled with joy. Excellent."
