2019 Chapoutier: "Flawless" - Jeb Dunnuck

Jeb Dunnuck has just published his review of the 2019 vintage in the Northern Rhône, which looks to be another stunning year for reds and whites. The reds he describes as “up near the top of the pyramid in modern-day vintages”, the whites as “terrific across the board” with “rich, powerful characters balanced by bright acidity and a pronounced sense of minerality”. In short, the vintage looks to be a winner.

Chapoutier have done extraordinarily well for both red and white – there are some very high scores here, with three 100 point whites and plenty of potential perfection in the reds. Reading through his notes, the words that keep coming up are “rich”, “powerful”, “elegant” and “brilliant”– this does look to be a very exciting year for one of the great houses of the Rhône.

The value pick is the Saint Joseph Les Granits with 94-96 points at £220 per six in bond - Jeb says it is "another brilliant example from this vineyard." Lovers of white Rhône should look no further that the 100-point Ermitage le Méal Blanc - which Jeb calls a "pinnacle Hermitage Blanc." It is available for £725 per six in bond.

Due to the tiny production and huge demand, 2019 Crozes Ermitage Les Varonniers sold out immediately. We have however been able to source a small parcel of the remarkable 2018 Crozes Ermitage Les Varonniers which scored a whopping 98 points from Jeb Dunnuck, which is also available at a mere £190 per six in bond.
