The precipitous slopes of Côte-Rôtie produce some of the greatest, purest expressions of Syrah in the world. The terraced vineyards have to be worked by hand, with the unique terroir yielding wonderfully aromatic, coolly ripe wines that can age wonderfully for decades. While some domaines like Guigal have become household names with prices that rival Bordeaux's First Growths, there remain some small producers making superb wines from the same hillside that offer great value.
Domaine Champet is one such producer that has remainined under family ownership for several generations. Joel Champet was at the helm from 1985 until he sadly passed away in 2017. Under his stewardship the wines were uncompromisingly traditional but excellent in certain vintages. Since his passing, his sons Roman and Max have taken control, making small tweaks that have improved the wines. Temperature controlled fermenters have come in, but the wines are still fully whole-bunch and are still matured in a majority of larger old barrels to bring richness to the wines without imparting overly oaky flavours.
Côte-Rôtie La Vialliere is the Domaine's flagship wine, coming from one contiguous slope on pure schist soils. The vine age averages over 40 years old, with the oldest plantings dating back to the 1930s. After fermentation on the stems the wine is matured in 70% larger 600 litre barrels with the remainder in barriques. Only 15% new oak is used, so the purity of fruit expression stands out.
The 2019 is a testament to the minor evolution undergone at here with the new generation; the wine retains its backbone and freshness but is bursting with fruit and peppery spice on both the nose and palate. Joe Czerwinski believes this to be the "most impressive" release from Champet, awarding it 95 points, and we are inclined to agree. This brilliant, finely etched Syrah will age comfortably for two decades but has an added sheen and approachability to be delicious already. It is a superb example of type and excellent value at just £300 per dozen in bond.

Peppered blueberries and raspberries mark the nose of the 2019 Cote Rotie la Vialliere, the latest—and most impressive—release from this historic domaine. Vaguely floral notes, hints of black olives and licorice add complexity to the bouquet, while on the palate, this medium to full-bodied effort still shows some appealing baby fat, an expansive yet structured feel and ample length on the finish.
95 points, Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate
Deep ruby-purple. Full of character on the nose, showing forest fruits, freshly ground black pepper, violets and cured meat. The palate is grippy and vibrant, bursting with red and black fruits. The whole-bunch character adds a wild, savoury complexity with green peppercorn and rosemary wonderfully complementing notes of violet and plum. There is smoky, meaty complexity that builds through to the long, vibrant finish. Quintessential Cote Rotie at a brilliant price point!
