2015 CVNE Imperial Gran Reserva

La Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE for short) is one of Rioja’s legendary bodegas. Founded in 1879, the company owns some of the region’s oldest vineyards and the wines are known for both outstanding quality and exceptional value for money.

Imperial Gran Reserva is a true Rioja classic.  First made in the 1920s, it is produced only in vintages that CVNE deem to be excellent.  In the vintages that make the quality cut, their best vineyards are set aside for Imperial Gran Reserva.  In 2015 - the finest vintage in Rioja since 2010 -  the gently sloping, south facing plots of Barbarroja and Antoñanzas were chosen.  A strict selection of the best grapes takes place on the sorting table at harvest time; a further selection is made prior to blending and bottling.

Put simply, this is an awful lot of wine for the money.  We tasted the wine yesterday and we think that this is pretty much the best Gran Reserva that money can buy and, at £430 per dozen in bond, this is arguably one of the best value fine wines that you can buy from any region.  It is easily a match for the most famous wines of Rioja and Ribera del Duero and is comparable to wines 5 to 10 times the price.

This is very ripe with blackberries, dried fruit, toasted oak and black licorice on the nose. Full-bodied with ultra-fine, linear tannins and a racy, refined finish. This has fantastic structure and length. It goes on for minutes. It needs time to open and refine even more. One of the best Imperiale Gran Reservas in a very long time. Drink after 2023.

Deep, brilliant ruby. Offers sharply defined, mineral-inflected red and dark berries, cherry liqueur, pipe tobacco, vanilla and exotic spice scents. Chewy and penetrating in the mouth, offering concentrated black raspberry, bitter cherry, boysenberry and spicecake flavors that steadily become more lively on the back half. The strikingly persistent finish features polished tannins, repeating minerality and a touch of candied flowers. 2025 - 2038

Produced in CVNE’s bodega within a bodega, entirely dedicated to Imperial, this is a superb Gran Reserva that combines Tempranillo with 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo. Rich, dense and layered, with fine new French and American oak, wonderful focus, savoury tannins and the depth and concentration to age for a decade or more.
