NEW RELEASE - The Remarkable 2014 Quinta da Leda from Casa Ferreirinha

Perhaps the best way to describe Casa Ferreirinha is as the Rolls-Royce of Portuguese winemaking. This estate is responsible for making some of the very best wines that this Iberian vinous superpower has to offer (including the mythical Barca Velha). Their newly released 2014 Quinta da Leda is a wine that certainly caught our attention when we tasted it recently amongst an array of very high quality Douro red wines. To add to its impressive quality, we feel that the very reasonable price makes it a must buy if you, like us, are starting to fall in love with the explosion of top quality still wines being produced in the Douro Valley these days.

Made from indigenous grape varieties, (60% Touriga Franca, 15% Touriga Nacional, 15% Tinto Cão and 10% Tinta Roriz), this bright young star is a wine that is approachable early but has the depth and structure to be laid down for many years to come. This is a powerful wine yet everything is in balance. It has an appealing viscosity and richness with layer upon layer of complexity. The fresh backbone of acidity that runs through the wine keeps everything in check, all the way through to a very long finish.

The 2014 vintage is yet to receive any scores from the critics. The Wine Advocate’s Mark Squires gave the 2011 a ringing endorsement with 95 points and a tasting note that gave it a drinking window of 2016 to 2033! We feel that the 2014 vintage is very close to, if not equal to that fabulous vintage, so it certainly comes with a ringing endorsement from the Farr Vintners team.

At £290 per 12 bottles in bond, we think that this is excellent value-for-money and it is a relatively inexpensive way to familiarise yourself with some very exciting winemaking from a Portuguese great.

The 2014 Quinta da Leda is deep ruby colour with beautiful, intense aromas of both red and black fruits, balsamic, resin and cedar – there is plenty of complexity here! The fruit is underpinned on the palate by spicy peppery notes along with hints of cocoa and chocolate. Excellent volume and depth, well integrated acidity and good quality tannins. The freshness is key here as it sets up perfectly a long and harmonious finish. A remarkable effort and Quinta da Leda is once again punching well above its weight. An age worthy wine with terrific minerality, structure and poise. Delicious! Drinking 2017 – 2030.
