“Rioja at its best”…2008 Rioja Reserva Viña Ardanza
The newly released 2008 vintage of Viña Ardanza marks the 75th anniversary of this classic, traditional style Rioja. Its winemaker, Julio Sáenz, thinks that the 2008 is comparable to the 2001– a vintage that he believes to be one of the best ever in the region.
Made from 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha, Viña Ardanza is La Rioja Alta’s flagship wine and, despite being labelled as a Reserva, is actually a Gran Reserva in all but name as it passes all the ageing requirements. Which means that, at £174 per 12 bottles in bond, this wine is an absolute bargain!
It was recently tasted by Decanter Magazine’s panel of Spanish wine experts (including two Masters of Wine) and all three tasters awarded it an impressive 95 points. See below for their tasting note. James Suckling also loved it, awarding it 94 points, as did Tim Atkin MW. This is clearly a wine of serious pedigree that is punching well above its modest price point.
If you are a fan of Rioja, or even if you are contemplating your first experience of this historic region, then this wine will provide instant drinking pleasure but will happily age for up to another 10 years.

“A 126-year-old winery at Haro’s Barrio de la Estacion which built its success on a number of prestigious brands, Vina Ardanza being one of the most renowned. This wine is classic Rioja at its best: 80% Tempranillo grapes from Alta and 20% Garnacha from Baja, aged between 30 and 36 months in used American oak barrels and at least one year in bottle. A flagship reserva.” “PBT [Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW] - The best classic style of Granacha and Tempranillo pulling together joyful fruit expression and serious depth. In the mouth it is amazingly complex, and unique. A benchmark Rioja blend. 95 points.” “SJE [Sarah Jane Evans MW] - A rich , sweet and savoury reserve style with loads of red cherries and a strong Garnacha influence. It is somewhat old-fashioned, in a good way, with plentiful integrated oak and a fine rasp of tannin. 95 points.” “PM [Pierre Mansour] - This has a wonderful oxidative style, giving it superb savoury nose of leather. It is a perfect combination of mellowness versus vigour, and at the same time exudes great finesse. Drink 2017-2024. 95 points.”
