The 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes comes from 85 to 90-year-old vines and is a blend of 95% Grenache and 5% Mourvedre. One of the most successful efforts from the 2011 vintage, it is full-bodied and rich revealing classic notes of balsam wood, garrigue, lavender, licorice, kirsch and black currants. This attractive, elegant, supple effort should drink nicely for a decade.
Even better, and one of the wines of the vintage is the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes. A classic effort that offers lots of roasted garrigue, crushed rock, chocolate and black cherry aromas and flavors, it has full-bodied richness, sweet tannin and a balanced, lengthy style that will allow it to continue drinking nicely for another decade.
Slightly less successful, with a dry, savory profile that should benefit from another year in bottle, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes offers up plenty of wild herbs, licorice, dried cherry and earthy notes to go with a medium-bodied, firm and slightly austere feel on the palate. Give it another 2-3 years and drink it through 2019. Drink 2015-2019.
