Bonnes Mares, Domaine Georges & Christophe Roumier 2000

Tasting Notes

Here the expressive and still relatively primary nose is ripe, pure and nicely complex that merges into detailed, balanced and harmonious flavors that like the 2001 are built more along the lines of a thoroughbred than a robust draft horse. I like the overall sense of grace and the only nit is the barest touch of greenness on the admirably long finish. By the incredible standards of this wine, a solid if not sensational effort though one that certainly transcends the vintage.

A similar hue to the 2002. The nose is more open and expressive with cherry, redcurrants, hedgerow and cut grass. Not as intense as the 1999 or 2002, but very good delineation. The medium-bodied palate is harmonious, perhaps a little angular with sharp acidity. Bitter cherry, raspberry leaf with an almost citrus raciness to it. Not great persistency, this will merit uncorking in 5-6 years time, though the finish suggests that it may close down for a few years. Tasted October 2006.

The star at chez Roumier in the 2000 vintage is Christophe's Bonnes Mares. Its beguiling aromas of spiced sweet cherries lead to a medium-bodied, silky-textured character crammed with cherries, currants, and candied raspberries. Lush, generous, and pure, it is deep, concentrated, and possesses a long, expressive finish. Projected maturity: 2004-2011.
