A high level of austere tannin in the finish may prove to be this medium-bodied wine’s undoing. While it possesses a dense ruby/purple color, big, extracted flavors, and a sweet perfume, the tannin’s angularity/astringency is cause for concern. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2014.
Dark, healthy-looking. Lots of ripe fruit and vibrant mid palate. Not absolutely thrilling but well put together. Long and heathy-tasting.
Having filled out over the last year, the 2001 is performing better than it did early in life. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of sweet mulberry, blackberry, and currant fruit intertwined with scents of licorice, toasty oak, and tobacco leaf. Medium to full-bodied, with moderate tannin as well as an elegant, pure finish, it should be at its finest between now-2015.
Barde-Haut's 2001 is an elegant, restrained effort displaying sweet cherry and black currant fruit on the attack, medium body, and a short finish. It is very good, however, it is not a star from this over-achieving property. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2012.
