Tasting Notes

Complex, precise aromas of apricot, mirabelle , honey and smoke. Silky, fat and full if quite dry; considerably richer than the young 2003, with sound framing acidity. Finishes very long, with a subtle whiplash of flavor. This has filled in quite nicely since I tasted it from barrel last spring.

The 2002 Puligny-Montrachet Clavoillon offers fresh talcum powder, white flower, and mineral aromas. Light to medium-bodied and satiny-textured, it is lush, deep, rich, and well-focused. Candied minerals are intermingled with flowers in its flavor profile. A slight tightening in the finish prevented a more exalted review. Drink this wine over the next 5 years.

To Pierre Morey, the 2002s are “from normal yields and reflect their terroir, two signs of a great vintage.” He went on to add, “Though it was an easy year in the vineyard without any burnt grapes, freezes, or hail, I’ll admit we were very worried between the twentieth of August and tenth of September, when the weather was wet and dreary. Thankfully, we were saved by the north wind.” He added that in 2003, Puligny-Montrachet had battled freeze, multiple hailstorms, and oidium (powdery mildew).

Great purity, allowing the vineyard to shine through. Suggests apple, fig and citrus aromas and flavours, but is really about mineral, energy and fine balance. Everything is in proportion and glides to a long, detailed finish. Drink now through 2015.
