Medium ruby color. Raisin, spice and cedar aromas turn to flowers, blackberry and cherry. Full-bodied, with masses of chewy tannins, yet they are velvety and long. Loads of character. Loads of richness. A massive wine. Full-throttle red. 1997 Italian blind retrospective. Best after 2010. 770 cases made.
Deepish ruby. Autumn undergrowth. Rich and round and flattering. Still with quite a bit of acidity . Transparent. Certainly no hint of oak! Dry, palate scrub finish. Smoky bonfire nose. Bone dry, Côte Rôtie silkiness.
The 1997 Aldo Conterno Gran Bussia is a superb bottle of young Barolo that has done an admirable job of avoiding the overripe, pruney aspects of the vintage. The nose is deep and takes quite a while to unfold, initially offering up notes of fresh fig and cassis fruit that seamlessly transition into classic black cherry fruit with twenty minutes air or so. To go along with the copious fruit tones, classic notes of anise, tarry minerality, quite intense rose petals and a surprisingly judicious framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, tight and beautifully delineated, with a fine core of fruit, impressive freshness and purity, firm tannins, and a very long, shapely finish. This should drink a bit earlier than is the norm for Gran Bussia, but should also prove to be one of the finest examples of this hot vintage. Drink between 2012-2030
