Tasting Notes

This is a delicate, lighter-styled effort revealing ethereal aromas of smoked herbs, red currants, cherries, and loamy soil. Medium-bodied, pleasant, but somewhat superficial, this is a vintage of diminished value to drink now and over the next 8-10 years.

Drink 2009-17 Tense nose reminiscent of a hawthorn hedge. Thick and sweet and flattering. A bit solid. For those who like density...

Medium red. Aromas of roasted plum, redcurrant, minerals, leather, game and pepper. Supple on entry, then juicy and tightly wound in the middle, with greener flavors than the 2003 or 2004: fresh herbs, black olive, green pepper, tobacco leaf, leather and game. Offers good lift in the middle, and finishes firmly tannic and lively, with the somewhat wild leather and game notes continuing.

This is a reassuring as well as encouraging offering from this great estate in the southern sector of Pessac-Leognan. A deep ruby/purple color, and a sweet perfume of cassis and vanilla are followed by a medium-bodied, expansively flavored, concentrated wine with loads of fruit, considerable definition, and soft tannin. Domaine de Chevalier can give the appearance of being too woody and lean, but the 2002 has flawlessly integrated wood. The tannin is sweet in this impressively elegant, expansive Pessac-Leognan. It should drink well between 2006-2016
