CDP Cuvée Chaupin, Domaine de la Janasse 1998

Tasting Notes

Janasse's 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin has reached full maturity. Some rust and orange at the edge are evidence of that, in addition to its complex, open-knit nose of roasted herbs, sweet black cherries, loamy soil, pepper, and spice. Fleshy, full-bodied, with a velvety mouthfeel, considerable opulence, and an expansive richness, this wine is best drunk now and over the next 5-7 years.

The 1998 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Chaupin (14.5% alcohol) is a voluptuous, opulently-textured, blockbuster with terrific fruit purity, and gorgeous aromas of roasted herbs, kirsch liqueur, blackberries, and Asian spices. The palate impression is one of sweetness because of the wine's high glycerin and ripe, jammy fruit. The chewy, long finish lasts for 40+ seconds. It can be drunk now, but readers should save a bottle for drinking in about a decade. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2018.
