Tasting Notes

The successful 2003 Hosanna has turned out to be a sexy, opulent, medium to full-bodied wine offering loads of berry fruit, licorice and truffle characteristics. There is no trace of dry tannins or underripeness in this beauty. It once again proves that Christian Moueix is a genius in culling out the finest fruit from this estate, which was once known as Certan Giraud. This 2003 should be drunk over the next 4-5 years. Drink 2014-2019

Dense ruby/purple-colored with a spicy, sweet nose of jammy cherries, mocha, and a hint of resin, the plump, fleshy 2003 Hosanna reveals light to moderate tannin. It is an impressively constituted blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. This stylish effort is exceptionally successful in such a challenging vintage for Pomerol. Give it 1-3 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 14+ years.

This wine reveals the complex, almost ethereal perfume this vineyard seems to produce. Notes of black raspberries, acacia flowers, sweet cherries, and some resiny notes jump from the glass of this 2003, which is built on elegance, finesse, and savory ripe fruit all nicely integrated into a medium-bodied, lush style. A beauty, it should prove to be one of the most charming and complex Pomerols of the vintage. Once again, I can’t help but comment on how similar Hosanna’s aromatics are to its nearby neighbor, the famous St.-Emilion Cheval Blanc. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2014.

A triumph in a difficult vintage for Pomerol, this blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc (the Cheval Blanc of Pomerol?) continues to demonstrate the brilliance of Christian Moueix. Produced from the oldest vines of the vineyard formerly known as Certan-Giraud, the 2003 Hosanna possesses a saturated ruby/purple color as well as gorgeous aromas of black raspberries, cherries, kirsch, flowers, and balsam wood. Lush and opulent, with low acidity, abundant fruit, and chewy, mouthfilling glycerin, this is a plump, fleshy, beautifully made Pomerol that should hit its prime in 2-3 years, and last for 12-15. The addition of 1-4% press wine had not yet been made, which is even more encouraging for this wine’s future. Moueix harvested the Merlot on September 6, but waited until September 17 to pull in the Cabernet Franc.
