Tasting Notes

A sleeper of the vintage, the 2003 possesses a dense plum/purple color, a rich, sumptuous perfume of roasted nuts, cedar, figs, plums, and black currants, medium to full body, silky tannin, low acidity, and a lush, hedonistic, sensual personality. It should drink well for a decade.

Aromas of blackberries, licorice and toasted oak follow through to a full-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a long finish. Very subtle. Best after 2008.

Intense crimson - looks very healthy. Some sweetness and minerals on the nose. Really very well balanced and complete. Racy and lifted yet with good substance and balance. Lovely texture and no excess sweetness. A very nice drink now. (Average group score: 14.2)

The best effort yet made by the staff at Pichon-Lalande, this deep ruby/plum-colored wine shows notes of smoky oak intermixed with Provencal herbs, cedar wood, black currants, and earth. A rather fleshy, ripe, attractive wine to drink now and over the next 12 years, it is a blend of 41% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This is an up-and-coming estate owned by the proprietors of Pichon-Lalande.

This looks to be the finest effort yet from this Chateau, which is owned and run by Madame de Lencquesaing of Pichon-Lalande. A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, it offers luscious kirsch liqueur notes intermixed with hints of blackberries, underbrush, and spice box. It possesses good density, a voluminous, chewy mouthfeel, and a long finish. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

Simple, straightforward red with medium body, light tannins and a fruity finish.

80/84
James Suckling, Wine Spectator (April 04), April 2004

Quite respectably deep colour. Light fragrant nose - rather in the idiom of the team at Pichon Lalande who make this. Sweet and round start then some green tannins insist but the fruit is pretty charming at first. Good effort for the vintage. Find this wine
