Tasting Notes

Proprietor Michel Reybrie and his winemaker, Jean-Guillaume Prats, have fashioned a brilliant blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. The dark purple-hued 2005 reveals a sumptuous bouquet of licorice, black currants, black olives, smoke, and damp earth. Fleshy and supple-textured with good tannin as well as decent acidity, this seriously-endowed, complex effort can be consumed over the next 12-14 years

Very deep colour. Fresh, aromatic and quite leafy. Sweet, very heavily oaked on the finish. A bit too brutal. I'd like it to relax a bit and kick its shoes off.

Black-red, very deep extraction and concentration, but there is florality there and finely grained tannins, very New World style, but takes balance from a great vintage. Drink 2009-18.

I continue to prefer the 2003 over the 2005 La Goulee, a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot fashioned by winemaker Jean-Guillaume Prats of Cos d’Estournel. Representing a fairly priced introduction to a classic Medoc, this complex Bordeaux is loaded with fruit. Chocolate, black currant, smoke, and earth characteristics emerge from this lovely, fleshy 2005. It possesses more structure and firmness than the 2003, and should drink beautifully for 10-12 years.

The 2005 may not be as good as La Goulee’s remarkable 2003, but additional time in barrel may prove otherwise. A 5,000-case blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot made by Cos d’Estournel’s winemaker, Jean-Guillaume Prats, from a northern Medoc vineyard, the dense ruby/purple-tinged 2005 exhibits beautiful aromas of creme de cassis, chocolate, and hints of earth, smoke, and spice. Displaying sweet tannin, a fleshy, medium-bodied, opulent style, and impressive purity as well as length, it will be approachable when released, and should keep for 7-10 years.

A pretty, ripe nose of fruit and mineral. Full-bodied and round, with good fruit and a medium finish. Pleasing already.
