CDP Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin, Perrin - Château de Beaucastel 2003

Tasting Notes

The 2003 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin has turned out even better than I thought last year. Black purple to the rim, with an extraordinary nose of smoke, camphor, blackberry, cassis, sweet cherry, white flowers, licorice, and Chinese black tea, the wine has superb richness, huge tannins, massive concentration, and a monster finish. Forget this wine for 5-8 years and drink it over the following 35 or more.

Still closed and tight, the 2003 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is ruby to the rim in color and offers up smoked black fruits, assorted floral characteristics, licorice, truffle and big minerality to go with a full-bodied, dense and chewy palate feel. Turning more spice-driven with air, this beauty is just now entering the early stages of maturity and needs another 3-4 years in the cellar to fully shine. It should have another decade or so of prime drinking after that. Impressive! It is a big step up from the traditional cuvee. It is worth noting that this bottle developed subtle corky aromas over the evening. However, even on the second day, this was still subtle and dwarfed by the core of fruit, hence, my decision to still include this review.

Shows the power of the vintage, with dark plum, raspberry confiture, hoisin sauce and tar notes held back by youthful tannins. Finish has impressive drive, with hints of chestnut, game and mineral. Best from 2009 through 2031.
