Tasting Notes

The 2009 Coutet feels a little simple on the nose compared to its peers, plenty of tropical fruit here such as mango and passion fruit but I would like more terroir expression. The palate is well balanced with an unctuous texture with fine acidity. This is not dissimilar to the 2009 Doisy-Daëne whereby there is much more quality in the mouth than on the nose, finishing with a detailed, stem ginger and pineapple tinged finish that is very appealing. I suspect this will improve in bottle. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. 2020 - 2045

Score: 92Neal Martin, vinous.com, March 2019

The 2009 Coutet has a very intense nose of apricot, papaya, honeysuckle and orange cordial that is very well defined. Interestingly I write the same comment as my appraisal out of barrel in that I would prefer just a little more vigor. However that is a minor quibble. The palate is very well- balanced with a rounded, caressing entry. There is certainly tremendous weight in the mouth and abundant botrytis, especially upon the unctuous finish. This has great potential - a fantastic wine from one of the finest Barsac estates. Drink now-2035+

Score: 95Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (205), March 2013

The Coutet 2009 is a sensational effort from Philippe Baly and his team. It has a fragrant nose of honey, vervain tea, pineapple, frangipane and apple-blossom, well defined if needing a little more vigour at the moment. The palate is vibrant on the entry, informed by touches of apricot and orange peel, very focused and tensile towards the long, sensuous, viscous finish. It has the same minerality exuded by Doisy-Daene and reminds me of a stellar '62 tasted just a few weeks previously. A magnificent Coutet.

Score: 96/98Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (188), April 2010

Pale to medium gold colored, the 2009 Coutet leaps from the glass with warm apple pie, dried mango, fresh straw, lemongrass, ginger and crème caramel notes. The rich, concentrated, unctuous flavors are lifted by amazing freshness, finishing epically long, layered and with a tantalizing nuttiness. 2019 - 2037.

Score: 96Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (241), March 2019

Lemon custard, with honey and apple pie aromas. Full-bodied, with wonderful intensity and a spicy dried lemon and mineral finish. Very powerful, with lots of botrytis. Could be the Sauternes of the year.

Score: 95/98James Suckling, WineSpectator.com, April 2010

Rather simple, floral, barley-sugar aromas. Sweet? Certainly. Interesting? A bit more debatable. Hot finish. Date tasted 29th March 2010. Drink 2016-2023.

Score: 16Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2010

One of the finest wines of Barsac - and indeed of the whole Sauternes region. Very attractive, open nose with bright fresh spring flowers. The palate has a touch of oily viscous fruit with nice weight but is not overly heavy. The finish retains freshness and balance and this is enjoyable wine that promises well.

Score: 16Farr Vintners, January 2010

The richness of candied orange and lemon peel are backed by ripe apricot and peach fleshing out the nose and enriching the palate. The spiciness of Noble Rot is in evidence and the freshness of apple and lime lifts the flavours balancing the lushness. The fruit lingers on the back palate. Drink 2020-2040.

Score: 91/96Derek Smedley MW, April 2010

The oak is a teeny bit too intrusive at the moment here, adding a slight bitterness on the palate, but the freshness and sheer verve of the wine beneath is exceptional. Not as sweet as some Sauternes (at 146 grams of residual sugar), this white benefits from the high proportion of Sauvignon Blanc, whose acidity adds backbone to the peach and honey flavours. 10+ years.

Score: 93Tim Atkin MW, April 2010

Large and rich with the intense and complete character of the vintage, super quality in the finish, perhaps broader than subtle, great future.
