Tasting Notes

The 2009 Phélan-Ségur has a more generous and slightly more exotic bouquet than its peers with plush red cherry, redcurrant, soy and forest floor aromas that soar from the glass. Thankfully it maintains ample freshness and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, quite firm and slightly chalky tannin with unerring symmetry and tension towards the finish that is pure class. This is an outstanding contribution to the vintage and it surely constitutes one of the best wines ever made at the estate. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. 2024 - 2055

The best Phelan-Segur since the 1990, this is a rather dense, full-bodied, massive wine for a cru bourgeois. Sweet blackberry and black raspberry fruit intermixed with crushed rock and a hint of subtle oak jump from the glass of this full-bodied, intense, yet attractive and alluring wine. There is significant depth and substance to this Phelan-Segur, which is a sleeper of the vintage that should last up to 15 or more years.

Deep aromas of crushed blackberries and fresh herbs. Full-bodied, with round and soft tannins and a polished texture on the finish. Rich and structured. Could be best ever from here.

Very dark. Sweet palate entry and very round. Maybe picked just a tad too late to be refreshing? Thick and sweet and full. But if you like this sort of New World style, you will enjoy this very much. Just a little bit of heat on the finish. Date tasted 1st April 2010. Drink 2016-2028.

58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. The 2005 here was brilliant and the Chateau believe that the 2009 is even better. If it were that would be an amazing achievement. It certainly has a black colour with impressive concentration. Lovely perfume and sweet vanilla with cassis on the nose. Impressively juicy and fat on the palate with big but ripe tannins. Serious stuff from this property. We were impressed.

There is an appealing freshness to the nose with a strong bilberry character. The predominantly black fruits are ripe fleshing out the mid palate and giving richness towards the back. There is good structure but the rounded tannins do not overshadow the fruit sweetness. Drink 2020-2040.

Sometimes described as making somewhat austere wines, Phélan-Ségur can seem a little gawky and awkward in its youth. That's not the case here though, for the wine is much better balanced than the 2005: concentrated and stylish with integrated, spicy oak and bright, refreshing acidity. This is the best young Phélan-Ségur I've ever tasted. 15+ years

Black red, big smoky, slightly gamey bacony nose, lots of lifted blackcurrant fruit, good supple, vigorous fruit and good length. Drink 2014-20.

Like many of the top 2009s, Phelan-Segur is a huge, full-bodied effort with massive fruit as well as good freshness, precision, and elegance. This is all rather paradoxical given previous great vintages that either lean toward cooler vintage characteristics or hot ones. This 2009 possesses both styles. It exhibits lots of mulberry, boysenberry, and crushed, jammy black fruits, abundant tannin, medium to full body, an opulent mouthfeel, and enough structure to evolve for two decades or more. This is a sleeper of the vintage. (Tasted two times.) Drink 2010-2030.

Tasted at the château, UGC and negociant. Sweet black plum and briary on the nose with moderate definition, not quite the brilliance of other Saint Estephe 2009s, but it coalesces nicely in the glass. Very pure, some chalk dust notes developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied, very taut, citric acidity, a little chalky towards the finish. Moderate depth. I like the focus here, the energy, though I think this is a wine that will show much better 4-5 months down the line. Cabernet dominated finish with just a touch of white pepper right on the finish. Certainly much better than the 2008 tasted alongside. Tasted March 2010.
