Charmes Chambertin VV, Domaine Bachelet 2002

Tasting Notes

A delicious shoulder of lamb for Easter Sunday dinner with baby broad beans and new potatoes was accompanied by a perfect bottle of Charmes-Chambertin vieilles vignes 2002 from Denis Bachelet. The colour stays youthful but the glycerol legs in the glass indicate that it is getting into a good place now. And what a nose! This was never the richest nor ripest of vintage and you can see that in the thread of rhubarb that mixes in with the lively red fruits. Mind you the label declares 13.5% so there is nothing lean or mean here. Superb aftertaste retains the fresh intricate red fruit approach and really does linger. A very fine wine to savour. Am I being ungenerous not to award it a 5th star?
