Slightly austere, leafy and herbal, the fresh 1998 lacks concentration, fat and fruit depth. It reveals a hint of herbs interwoven with attractive red and black currant aromas, but the wine falls off on the palate, and requires drinking up as it is likely to become increasingly desiccated.
The 1998 Lynch-Bages shows less aging, and the fruit here is darker and more compact than others in this era: blackberry, wild hedgerow, cedar and a touch of wild mint. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannins, blackberry, briary, iron rust and an underlying bitterness that just dries out the finish a little. This is quite a serious Lynch Bages, and I would drink this in the near future. Tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical at the château.
Big and beefy and still very young and even quite raw. Still quite chewy. By no means the most delicious wine here even if it is the most recognisable and valuable! A bit jagged in terms of acidity.
Very impressive black colour. Extracted, almost prune/raisin like concentration. This is a big, thick wine, atypical of the vintage. Lots of richness and density, very chewy, with a big meaty finish. A very good effort. FV16.
Ex-cellar bottle tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical. Very ripe on the nose, blueberry, a touch of iodine, blackcurrant wine gums, cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with quite thick tannins, a little chewy and linear, quite succulent, rounded, blackberry, a hint of dates, citrus freshness towards the finish. The 1998 has a lot of energy and pizzazz about it, although it is just a little overdone, when there was no need. Drink now-2020+ Tasted September 2009.
