Côte Rôtie, Domaine Jean-Paul Jamet 2008

Tasting Notes

Vivid red. Highly fragrant, displaying scents of red berries, rose and baking spices, with a hint of white pepper. Smells like a sexy Burgundy. Lithe and precise raspberry and cherry flavors show a suave blend of sweetness and energy, with zesty acidity adding lift. Finishes on a nervy mineral note, with an excellent, floral-dominated persistence. I underestimated this wine when I tasted it last year.

From young vines, mostly in Gerine: Intensely floral and spicy, with strong scents of red berries and cherry. Tangy and refreshing red fruit flavors, with a late note of blood orange and no obvious tannins. From Bonniviere and Truchet: Intense red berry aromas, with nuances of white pepper and violet adding complexity. Zesty, pure raspberry and cherry flavors show with strong mineral snap. From Mornachon, not destemmed: High-pitched red and dark berry aromas are complemented by notes of potpourri and cinnamon; smells a lot like pinot noir. Fresh red fruit flavors are braced by tangy minerality and framed by silky tannins. Taut and nicely energetic. From Lancement and Le Plomb: Fresh red berries and minerals on the nose, with sexy floral notes. Bright, tightly wound raspberry and cherry flavors become spicier with air and pick up a smoky herbal quality. Very fine tannins carry through a sweet, spicy finish. From Moutonne, Cote-Baudin and Leyat: Powerful cherry and cassis on the nose, with a touch of licorice. Structured and chewy, with bitter cherry and blackcurrant flavors and good back-end lift. Weighty but not thick, finishing with strong sweetness. From Landonne, Cote Blonde and Cote Rozier: Mineral-driven aromas of strawberry, raspberry and Asian spices, with a sexy floral quality. The strong red fruit flavors are nervy and precise and the texture is fine-grained. A very elegant sample with strong finishing lift and impressive clarity.
