Tasting Notes

The 2010 Coddington Chardonnay opens with delicate notes of warm lemons, white peaches and fresh ginger with hints of apple tart and crushed stones. This medium-bodied, vibrant and silky Chardonnay has great concentration and a long, citrusy finish. Drink it now to 2017+.

Bright medium yellow. Aromas of pear skin and brown spices, complemented by musky butterscotch and hazelnut nuances. Fat and ripe but not overly sweet, with stone fruit and spicy oak flavors showing a chewy, tactile quality. Finishes with very good spicy breadth and firmness but this young wine is still a bit muted by reduction today.

The nose has racy smoky fresh fruits the start of palate hazel nuts and flint. Supple and fleshy in the middle silky and rich the richness backed by lime and apple a touch of mineral with concentration richness a powerful mix of ripe fruits on the finish. 2018-26

Youthful and intense, this is a great vintage and the wines are all standing the test of time and showing it boldly. Lovely wet chalk minerality, apple cordial and a subtle hint of bruised lemons and savoury white peach. Wonderful complexity follows to the palate that is harmonious and fresh, seamless and finely textured with smokey, piquant, citrusy length. Delicious.

Fine mineral, toasty nose. Lively citrus and pear fruit with a stylish breadth and lovely focus, showing notes of white peach and subtle toast. Youthful and lovely.

Limpid pale greenish gold. Hint of reduction on the nose. Already quite open and friendly with a slight floral note. Really racy and interesting. Makes you want to drink it this minute. Long. Just the ticket! Drink 2014-2019.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, May 2015

Again that peachy note that I found on the 2009 but even more intense. This vintage is much more obviously identifiable as New World Chardonnay. Orange and apricot but not from botrytis. Full of texture and quite a firm grip and spicy finish. Less finesse than in the 2009. (JH) 13.5%

A rich and mellow wine with tons of white-fruit character and a lot of liveliness and finesse. This is now at its pleasure peak. What makes it stand out in the global, high-end chardonnay pack is how the power and richness are tightly reined in. Great balance at the generous finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Tasted blind at Farr Vintners Kumeu/White Burgundy tasting. The 2010 Coddington Chardonnay from Kumeu River has an open and expressive bouquet with lemon peel and flint scents, a little conservative perhaps but nicely focused. The palate is well balanced with a pleasing, lime and nettle-driven opening. There is a herbaceous undertow here, gently building to a lightly spiced middle with a tang of white pepper on the delightful and persistent finish. "Bon vin," as they say in Auckland. Drink: 2016 - 2030

Edgy again after the 2012 & 2011. And this feels like it’s holding back; there is more to come. Again there is a completeness to this – either in the wine or maybe it’s just that it’s spot on right now. Long. At a perfect stage.
