The 2011 Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay exudes gorgeous aromas of honeysuckle, grapefruit essence and peach kernels along with an undercurrent of beeswax, cedar, preserved ginger and jasmine. The elegantly styled, medium-bodied palate offers a great concentration of taut fruit, creamy and toasty layers alongside a well-placed line of uplifting acid to carry it to a long, lively and mineral-laced finish. Drink it 2014 to 2022+.
The flagship Kumeu chardonnay delivers Montrachet-like richness and deep complexity. The weight is staggering but the poise and balance makes it all seem effortless. Ripe peach and pear, citrus and gently toasty oak, with chalk and nougat, too. The palate has terrific concentration and impressive layering and build, crescendos with impressive energy and then fades with sizzling acidity holding it in place, with a grilled-hazelnut finish. Drink now.
Ripe apricots the nose has depth the start of the palate a rich mix of ripe fruits. Flint and lime underpin a streak of freshness lighter at the back with ripe greengage and yellow peach emerging on the finish. 2018-24
Compelling notes of greengage, lemon and lime, creamy yellow citrus and a real plush, broad, soft harmonious textural expression.
Rather simple nose. Satin texture. Good vitality. Really very juicy and appealing. So juicy and gouleyant. A great drink for now. Not that persistent but impressive – especially for this vintage.
Drink 2016-2024
Cool and delicate on the nose for a wine from Maté's Vineyard with plenty of herbal character. Powerful and crisp, this will give so much more pleasure with food than it does in the tasting room. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
