The 2012 Mate's Vineyard offers pretty, floral, orange blossom and buttered toast notes with some green apple accents and a waft of nutmeg. Very tight in the mouth, this wine is not quite as concentrated as other vintages, giving a very restrained and taut character at this early stage with a very long minerally finish. I've probably been conservative with my score as this one really needs time a bit more time in bottle. Drink 2016 - 2024.
Orange blossom and white flowers the nose is fragrant fresh with a hint of nutmeg the start of the palate restrained lots of crunchy apple. Under this there is fleshy sweetness lots of ripe nectarines their richness balanced by the freshness of tangerines and limes the finish is long lingering precise. 2018-28
Bright lemon in the glass, there is a creamy, ripe nose of peaches and apricots layered with a little wood smoke. The palate is rich, round and buttery with oodles of ripe stone fruit and a hint of mango and pineapple. The ripeness is balanced by crisp acidity and some smoky oak notes. An impressively powerful and intense wine that retains great balance. 1000 cases made.
Wonderfully austere nose of crushed gravel and wet grey slate. Palate is broad and harmonious with a real powder puff softness and femininity. Dense but light on its feet, this is wonderful to drink now.
Very fresh and fine and detailed. Bright lemon, crisp apple with great acidity. Very linear and refined.
Well mannered. Quite a bit of evolution on the nose. Light and creamy. Sweet and lively. Lime chews. Lots of fun and intensity but perhaps not the most classical of these wines.
Drink 2017-2030
This beautiful, creamy chardonnay has real elegance, in spite of the intense, lemony freshness at the finish and is screaming for you to order a great piece of fish in a rich sauce. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
Tasted blind at Farr Vintners Kumeu/White Burgundy tasting. The nose on the 2012 Maté’s Vineyard Chardonnay has more intensity and complexity than the 2010: very detailed and harmonious with limestone, nettle and citrus lemon notes. The palate is fresh and poised with lime and green apple, very well-judged acidity with a linear, Chablis-like finish that is an absolute joy. This is an outstanding Maté’s Chardonnay, perhaps the best that Kumeu River produced that year. Drink: 2015 - 2030
Very pale straw. Precise. More open than the Hunting Hill 2012. Already very delicious. Great combo of fruit and crystalline precision. Drink 2016-2022.
