Tasting Notes

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (176), April 2008

Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. Deep and pure in colour. This has a very ripe bouquet that makes me think of Pontet Canet! There are scents of blackberry, briary and a touch of fresh dates, nicely defined and modern in style - a lot of polished oak still to be subsumed. The palate is well balanced with ripe succulent fruit, sweet and lithe towards the polished finish. A fine effort from Mr Seely & team.

Impressive concentration for the vintage, with plenty of currant and berry on the nose and palate. Medium-to-full body, fine tannins and a medium finish. Well done for the vintage

James Suckling, WineSpectator.com, April 2008

Smoky edged from the first nose (a true signature of the vintage) with gunsmoke and campfire notes. The fresh acidities of a cooler summer are clear through the mid palate, softened by blackberry, caramel and white pepper spice. Soft tannins, finessed, a little soft on the finish, no need to wait to drink this, but you'll find plenty to enjoy. No more Cabernet Franc from this point in the blend. 80% new oak. Yields of just 32hl/ha. Only 2003 produced less. Picked young Merlots 18-20 Sep and then 1-9 Oct for older Cabernets. Very dark. Rich and round and a bit forced and sweet and furry. Very angular and green. Round and a bit simple

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2008

Bright ruby-red. Very pure aromas of cassis, minerals, licorice and bitter chocolate, all lifted by a note of violet. Sweet, broad and round for the vintage, with lovely energy to the flavors of cassis, chocolate, minerals, menthol and flowers. Juicy and sophisticated wine with terrific balance and no dip in the middle. Finishes with subtle complexity and length and sweet, fine-grained tannins. A major success for the year.

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, June 2008

Black-red, pronounced smoky blackcurrant nose, shows freshness of fruit with good length and good grip, classy for the medium term. Drink 2012-20. 4 stars.

Cropped at 34hl/ha, this has a deep garnet/purple colour. The nose is very closed at first but begins to show some attractive oyster shell aromas interwoven with the cedary black fruits. Something of estuarine about it: cockle sheds? The palate has good acidity, fine tannins, very tight, perhaps lacking a little depth but good acidity and clarity on the finish. Supple and engaging – a “correct” Pichon-Baron. Tasted April 2008
