Vosne Romanée Malconsorts, Domaine du Clos Frantin 2013

Tasting Notes

A distinctly floral nose combines notes of red and dark currant with an attractive range of spice elements. The muscular, serious and powerful medium-bodied flavors possess excellent depth of material that coats the palate on the very firmly structured finale where the tannins are quite prominent, indeed one could aptly describe this as chewy. While it's entirely possible that this will come together in time as the structure does appear to have reasonably good phenolic maturity, I suspect that his will always have a bit of an edge to it.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts has a classy bouquet with satisfactory definition and mineralité, perfumed and quite seductive thanks to those pure Morello cherry, crushed strawberry and rose petals aromas. Obvious perhaps? The palate is medium-bodied with strawberry and raspberry on the entry, saturated tannin, harmonious and at the moment driven by the winemaking. I was initially quite smitten with this Malconsorts but later on reflection, I wondered whether it conveys the structure, the backbone one seeks from this vineyard. Tasted September 2016.
