Tasting Notes

A major sleeper of the vintage, the 2003 Potensac is a tribute to just how good this wine can be in top vintages. A blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc, it was harvested between September 13-25, and came in at 13.9% natural alcohol, which is higher than its more famous sibling, Leoville Las Cases. This elegant, fully mature 2003 exhibits lots of black currant and black cherry fruit intermixed with forest floor and underbrush notes, a plush, medium-bodied palate, and sexy fruit. Enjoy it over the next 4-5 years. Drink 2014-2019

A success in this torrid vintage, the 2003 Potensac offers up aromas of red fruit, cedar box and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and vibrant palate. At approaching age 20, it continues to drink very well, but there is no reason to defer gratification. - Drink 2007-2027

Very pretty blackberry and currant aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a silky finish. Nicely done. Best after 2009.

The dark plum/purple-tinged 2003 Potensac is a sleeper of the vintage. Sweet, exotic scents of mincemeat, black currants, cherries, and crushed rocks are followed by an elegant, fleshy, forward, delicious claret to enjoy over the next 5-7 years, although this wine has a tendency to last longer. It is one of the finest Potensacs produced in several years.

A super effort from this northern Medoc property, owned by the Delon family of Leoville Las Cases, this sleeper of the vintage should be a fine value when released. Tipping the scales at 13.7% alcohol, it is undoubtedly the most powerful Potensac ever produced. A blend of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot, it exhibits a deep ruby/purple color in addition to plump, juicy, low acid, fleshy, succulent, pure, classic flavors with no hints of over-ripeness or weightiness. It reveals surprising freshness in spite of its high alcohol and heady, intoxicating style. Buy this hedonistic Medoc by the caseful, and enjoy it over the next 7-10 years.

A wonderful abundance of crushed fruits on the nose. Full-bodied, with loads of ripe berry fruit and super-silky tannins. Then long. This might be the best Potensac I have ever had - almost 92-94.
