As is often the case in sherry, Hidalgo’s Manzanilla En Rama La Gitana offers some of the best value to be found anywhere in the wine world. The 2018 release has an open and expansive nose with fresh almonds, preserved lemons, and freshly baked bread on the nose. The palate has the great tang that you would expect from a Manzanilla, saline and briney, bone dry and stuffed full of waxy citrus. The En Rama style adds texture and weight, bolstering the umami, savoury character through to a long, moreish finish. Perfect to drink over the summer months.

The annual release of the special, unfiltered and unfined En Rama version of this legendary Manzanilla sherry arrived in the UK. Select merchants will have this wine on their shelves this very weekend, so this write-up is a scoop! There is nothing like the vibrancy and distinction shown by this elite, bone-dry style of wine – it is akin to drinking a Manzanilla straight from the barrel.

My pulse quickens at this time of year when La Gitana’s En Rama is shipped over to the UK for its annual, limited-release run. This is the wild, revved up, mesmerising version of the everyday glugger, La Gitana Manzanilla, itself a stunning, bone dry wine. Made from free run juice and using only natural yeasts for fermentation this is one of the most unique and otherworldly wines on the planet. The term ‘En Rama’ means that this Sherry is unfiltered and unfined, so it is effectively like drinking it straight from the barrel. You must track it down at all costs if you love dry Sherry.

It’s a parcel that I am very excited to open each year. It’s not very big and it only weighs a few pounds but when the dinky, preview, sample bottle of La Gitana’s En Rama arrives I get a roller-coaster thrill. Made from only the ‘free run’ juice and only using natural yeasts for fermentation this is the most honest and elemental of all styles of Manzanilla. The term ‘En Rama’ means that this bone dry, palate-invigorating, sharply tangy Sherry is bottled without filtration or fining. It is literally from the barrel and therefore it is the untainted juice directly harvested from Palomino grapes grown in the famous Albariza soils of the Balbaina and Miraflores districts of El Puerto de Santa María respectively Sanlúcar de Barrameda. La Gitana is one of the most incredible wines found on our shelves and there is a bottle stationed permanently in my fridge door, but the rare, seasonal En Rama version turns up almost exactly when this column is published and it tastes like you are standing in the Bodega and have simply plunged your arm into the barrel and pulled out and ice cold glass of electrifying Manzanilla.
